Rhine Falls (Rheinfall)

It is true that it is dwarfed by larger and more impressive water falls like Victoria Falls on the Zambia/Zimbabwe border and Iguaçu Falls on the Brazil/Argentina border. However Rhine Falls (Rheinfall) holds the record of the biggest waterfall in Europe.

#rhinefalls

The falls are 150 meters wide and 23 meters high, providing an impressive show and plenty of roar while the very clean water flows at 600,000 litres per second during summer time. It is also not so violent allowing the tourist boats to navigate very close to the falls. If you are visiting you should take one of the rides. They vary from short 15 minutes round trips to large 70 minutes where you get to navigate down the "rhinischen Amazonas" (sic) all the way to the Rheinau on the Germany border and back. You can alight and visit the Rheinau Abbey, etc. and return on the next available schiff.

You can find the timetable here Schiffmändli Kursfahrplan and more information about the boat cruises on Schiffmändli website

You have mainly 3 options for food:

  • the Schlössli Wörth restaurant (but it was reserved for a private do so I can't comment on that)
  • the Inseli Bistro where you can enjoy a snack (e.g. Rhyfall Pommes Frites or Fischknusperli) in the terrace with waterfall view. But there is also plenty of opportunity for a picnic and even a barbecue
  • the Restaurant Park am Rheinfall with its Pipapo (Pinsa, Pasta e un Po de Più)

Incidentally that was my first contact with Pinsa, a new Italian gastronomic concept (but pretty much similar to Pizza).

There is also plenty of opportunity for a picnic or even a barbecue if the weather helps.

It is a very pleasant day out and just a short train ride (from 50 minutes) from Zurich, The season started 28 March 2021
